Horizon Europe aims to ensure Europe’s global competitiveness. The event brought together experts from EU institutions, practitioners, and national stakeholders. They discussed the lessons learned from the Widening programme and future perspectives. Additionally, they charted a path towards a more robust programme in the future.

The aim of the Widening programme is to promote scientific excellence across all EU Member States. Additionally, it highlights the importance of increasing the participation of less established countries (Widening countries) in research and innovation in Horizon Europe.

The event on 20 November was attended by over 70 participants. The participants included representatives from EU institutions, regional and national bodies, European networks, research institutes, and EU projects.

Discussions during ‘Brussels: FutureTalks’ yielded the following results:

  • The Widening programme is a success story, and further development and customization are crucial, with the involvement of all stakeholders from the outset.
  • There are excellent team initiatives from which we should learn to co-create the future programme.
  • Supporting the development of innovation ecosystems in Europe is crucial for enhancing Europe’s competitiveness. Specifically, it is essential to empower local actors with the necessary tools.

We would like to express our gratitude to all those involved for their valuable contributions to the discussions on creating a more inclusive European research environment.
